I stumbled across something interesting today while reading about Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper's recent anti-drug rhetoric (did you miss this? Check here or here.) It seems that Canada has studied this issue in depth before, in 1969. They commissioned a report they eventually called the Le Dain Commission and solicited citizens to testify regarding their experiences with drugs. One of the many people who answered the call were Beatles legend John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono. His testimony (Yoko's is redacted since she is still living) can be found here. I found his testimony to be honest, interesting, and still relevant almost 40 years later. While the report eventually recommended that cannabis be removed from the Narcotic Control Act and that the provinces implement controls on possession and cultivation, it's worth noting that even though the report was widely praised for its thoroughness and thoughtfulness the Canadian government almost completely ignored its recommendations. Typical.
