This August, the ashes of Hunter S. Thompson will be shot from a cannon
embedded into a 53' sculpture of the Gonzo "fist" logo at his compound
in Woody Creek, Colorado. It's a fitting tribute to a man who was
larger than life while at the same time embodying the way life should
be lived: full speed ahead and with reckless abandon.
Hunter Thompson was an inspiration to me in a lot of ways.
Obviously the Good Doctor lived his life to the fullest, engaging in
acts of wanton hedonism most of us will never know. He eschewed
political correctness. He used drugs prodigiously. He wrote
some of the best goddamn prose anyone has ever read. All this
while living the sort of life I would emulate were I not hamstrung by
an annoying sense of personal responsibility and a powerful case of the
Fear.
But just because noone can live up to the example he set doesn't mean
we can't learn from the lessons he taught. It's tempting for the
uninitiated to look at Hunter and see nothing more than a drug fueled
mutant, a quasi-journalist with an axe to grind. The best part is
that's exactly what he was - he never denied it. He spawned an
entire genre of drug addled wannabes, none of whom matched the
greatness of the original. But it's from
his hordes of half baked imitators that we can draw the greatest lesson
that Dr. Gonzo had to teach: the magic is not in the dope. It's in your head.
RIP HST
